- If there's a breakout star from the new minimal scene in 2023, it's Rui Bai. Her debut back in 2021 was introspective and moody, though earlier this year she drew a line in the sand with an excellent EP on Pleasure Club. That record was filled with melodic, darkly tinted techno that felt of a kind with Montevideo producers like Michelle and Two Phase U. Her new release for Picnic is bigger and even bolder. In fact, "Back To" might be the best thing she's released yet. The slight electro stutter of the 808s sets the stage for a never-ending sequence of melodies. Each new synth pattern changes the mood—one minute we're riding high on plaintive pads, the next we're crashing down to earth with venomous acid. It's a sweaty techno symphony of the highest order.
