Jamie xx - It's So Good

  • A melodramatic fusion of UK garage and techno.

  • Jamie xx's latest single—released as part of a Chanel campaign—is tuned for maximum melodrama. On the surface, it's a lot of the usual stuff: pitched-up vocals, a helium-tinged melody that mirrors the steel drums of "Far Nearer" and a UK garage-ish drum pattern. But the bass pulses underneath growl with the manufactured menace of an Afterlife party, all pomp and circumstance with nowhere to go. Heart-in-mouth breakdowns only notch up the tension, but the quivering melodies never quite explode the way they could. Instead, it feels like pre-packaged catharsis, like it was made to soundtrack chic drone footage of a heaving dance floor.
