Sasha & Digweed at Crobar, New York

  • Sasha and Digweed will always have a unique relationship with New York City. Their residency at Twilo became an integral part of bringing dance music to the United States. Over the years they have developed a wonderful sense for what works when they DJ together. Although their dates playing together are much less frequent than before, New Yorkers have been lucky that each year after the WMC they team up to play at Crobar. Not only are they a great team, they are two of my favorite DJs individually. I have not missed them either together or as individuals since Crobar opened in New York. Needless to say I was very excited for things to get started! However, the night turned out to be a disaster. I arrived at Crobar and was ready to finally blow off some steam after a turbulent week. I waited in line, got past the bouncers, and proceeded to the guy that had the guestlist. After standing in front of him for 30 seconds (he seemed to be meditating) I asked for for him to look at the list and find my name. Now, there are various professions on this planet. Some are more difficult than others. Some people are doctors, lawyers, accountants, janitors, carpenters, astronauts, etc. This guy's job is to look up people's names on piece of paper. One does not need to be a rocket scientist to do it. It also is also not heavy-lifting. This guy clearly could not give two shits about what he was doing. He pulled out a crumpled up list, mumbled something (which after some prodding turned out to be that I was not on the list), and dismissed me. So now I was irritated. However, given that it was Sasha and Digweed I still went up to the register and was going to pay to get in. Well, I was going to pay until the lady told me it was $50 to get in. FIFTY DOLLARS!!!! (Since when are two DJs worth that much? But I digress.) Now, I ask you, when is the last time you paid to go work for someone? I already went through Crobar's process in order to get on the Press List and had my camera with me and notepad to do a review with photos. I had officially hit my boiling point and I said fuck it- (literally, I said "fuck it") and stormed out of Crobar and into a cab. So here is a recap of my evening: cab ride to Crobar, being yanked around by some asshole that thinks he is better than me because he gets to hold a piece of paper with some names on it, being told I get to pay $50 so I can give publicity to a club, and then paying for a cab ride home. I have always thought Crobar to have one of the nicest staff's in New York (as you can read from the ton of reviews that I have done for Resident Advisor), but it seems to have changed. Given that there is a real struggle for crowds in this town now with all the clubs battling for attendance, this tells me that things have turned for them. It's a shame that I missed out on something I was really looking forward to. Note: If I could rate this night in the negative I would.
