Jim Shimmer - Space Races/The Escape

  • After making his debut on 777 with The Quad (featuring an awesome remix by Future Funk Squad vs Hi8 that I must say has grown on me), Jim Shimmer returns with a double platter of electro-infused tunes with his sights targeted directly towards the dancefloor. Space Races makes use of a jumpy 4 to the floor beat for the intro with space station chatter filling up the background. The beat is then cut during the breakdown as Jim introduces a dark wavering bassline, a syncopated drum roll and massive builds. After the build, the tune unleashes a massive siren like hook accompanied by a spongey synth with a wobbly bassline powering up the bottom end. What's fun about this tune is that it's a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs with a couple of stops along the way for those much needed breathers. The Escape on the flip uses similar elements - bouncy beats, big basslines and even siren noises (during the buildup) but is a much more energetic trip through Jim's production style. In unison with the bassline (which has a catchier melody compared to Space Races) Jim drops a high pitched synth line - quite catchy and it's definitely showing a more musical side of the breakbeat spectrum.
