It's particularly tricky when remixes of a well-known and loved track are involved. Steve Barnes aka Cosmic Sandwich released ‘Man in a Box’ last year and it was a particular favourite among minimal DJs due to its combination of funky bass, bouncy guitar and k-hole sonics.
Actually I’m not a huge fan of the original, finding it a little plodding. However both of these remixes are quite radical reworkings. Both lose the funk but keep the trippy feel of the track. Patrick Chardronnet goes for a hypnotic re-rub with throbbing, slightly flabby synths and a progressive construction. It builds gently but doesn't really go anywhere.
Markese and Cosili's remix is light and spidery in feel and keeps more elements from the original. They’re aiming for jacking but the clunkiness of the beats means it ends up closer to lurching. The best part of the track is the weird spinback noise on the last bar. Shame they couldn’t have made the rest of it sound as interesting.
Ultimately these are fairly inessential remixes. They’d fit well into a minimal set but I doubt they’ll excite many dancefloors.
