Chaton - Catch The Beat EP

  • Top quality house and techno just keeps coming out of Switzerland lately, and this twelve is no exception. Chaton, the owner of the rock solid Plak label and record store, comes to Agnes's Sthmlaudio label with ‘Catch The Beat’, a jerky and dark piece of minimal house that's the perfect midnight record, or perhaps 2 a.m. record if you're at an all night club. The rhythm is disco but the sounds are dubby and minimal, and very much what you're used to from Plak Records, i.e. anonymous tracks that work the floor. On remix duty is label owner Agnés, one of the most prolific producers around lately. However where you might expect a dark re-touch in the same style as the original, he completely transforms the track into a deft piece of afterhours deep house music. There's a real swing to the remix that's a little evocative of Kerri Chandler, or perhaps some of the recent releases on fellow Swiss label Mountain People. And as with Mountain People or Chandler, simplicity reigns supreme. Agnes's remix is just a vocal, a perfectly airy synth line and a beat, and that's why you'll find yourself playing it over and over again. This is a twelve that's worth your time and money.
