Arne Weinberg - A True Story

  • Arne Weinberg is a producer much enamoured of the deep, emotional side of techno, so releasing on Matrix, the Detroit label set up by Sean Deason and responsible for releasing people like Claude Young, seems like the ideal place for him. Mr. Weinberg wastes not a moment of this 12": all four tracks affect me deeply. Sure, this release aims squarely at the heart strings and not at the feet, but it is none the less for it. Each track covers a different style: ‘A True Story’ is the skittering, drifting electro opener of the set, and probably my favourite. The rest of the tracks range from techno to jungle and back to electro again. What they have in common, however, is the sound of old hardware, and Weinberg's unfaltering sense of melody. It calls to mind all the greats of Detroit, yet instead of feeling like a throwback, Weinberg’s sense of melody elevates the productions with a certain timelessness. The irony of this is that this style of dance music is actually rather timely—the recent popularity of people like Prosumer and Cassy have put the focus squarely on emotional house music with a sense of history to it. Overall then, this is a release that will cater perfectly to those who liked to be moved on the dancefloor in more ways than one.
