Ooblo - Protex Blu

  • The alter ego of Bola who comes from the Happy Mondays, Ooblo provides some chilled out, trippy and jazzy hip hop to soothe a few restless souls out there from the usual bombardment of banging untz untz and doof doof. Reminiscent of works by DJ's Krush, Cam and Shadow, Ooblo incorporates live instrumentation throughout the whole album to create a relaxing atmosphere. Optifuse and Optifused are soulful trumpet numbers with some movie samples laid throughout. Sit back and have a drink as you have a cheery 7 minutes of bliss to listen to. You could easily mistake Jello Marsalis for a DJ Cam tune with it's piano loops and movie samples and slo-mo laidback tempo. Instruments like the flute are known to subdue almost any unsuspecting listener and feature heavily on Chilli Yakuza Moving into some more synthetic sounds is Compartmentalized. Leaning into some industrial percussion sounds as well. Jethro works his magic with his saxophone towards the end. Completelymentalized sees Jethro introducing the song with some sax craziness, followed by some quick drum patterns and a totally wicked electro robot sample. Still continuing on the laidback grooves, Froot Loop is similar to some of that spacey jazz done by Herbie Hancock, with a nice touch of keyboard. Ending off the album is Solstice which starts off with a male voice who sounds similar to Maxijazz from Faithless. Fans of Massive Attacks, Karmacoma should be interested in this. All in all, a well done album however you can't help but feel that a lot of it has been done before.
