Moon Unit - Connections If one of the main criticisms leveled at Supersoul's recent compilation was the fact that it was simply too much to take in one sitting, Moon Unit's new single should be perfect: A bit-sized five-minute pop confection. Problem is, it also lives up to the label's reputation for throwing in a bit of leftfield experimentation along with its hook-laden electro. That means that the otherwise beautiful, floating synths that guide the track along its path are pinched, tweaked and nudged by curious hip-hop samples lurking furtively low in the mix. I'm all for Xaver Naudascher and Paul Mogg's basic track here, but what must've seemed like essential garnishing makes "Connections" less immediately present than it could—and should—be. It's a good track as it is, but it should be great.

Ewan Pearson seems to understand this, largely ignoring the distractions and focusing with a laser-sharp intensity on making the original sing out loud and clear. He puts his usual bounce into it, upping the tempo from its previous snail's pace to a healthy 112 BPM. What results is yet another piece ripe for the picking once Piece Works II comes out, foregrounding Rosalind's vocals early on and then dropping them out for an extended instrumental workout that thickens the groove considerably.
