  • Springing into action with the cheeky ass-bounce of Minus 8’s ‘Badman and Throbin’, this compilation is convincing from the get-go. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, nor attempt to be a throwaway hits-of-the-moment album. Jackie Brown riffs cut through spacious, nuanced basslines amidst a bongo-nanza of hands thumping drums. Winner. Often compilations get it very right when selecting artists, but very wrong when choosing their tracks. Ian Pooley, Etienne De Crecy, Ski Oakenfull Krafty Kuts and Freddy Fresh have been appearing on every release to do with bricks and mortar (ie house) and to see them on this 14 track nugget wasn’t a surprise. Thankfully their offerings were impressive enough to shock and excite, straying from the hits and memories formula. For one, Pooley’s ‘Bay of plenty’ has more hooks than a fisherman. Both foreground and background music, this mixed bag of goodies is a handy addition to any collection, ripe for the plucking when friends come over and you need the perfect soundtrack to set the mood. Especially if you’re inclined to getyagearawf. A liberated tone translates through the organic percussion, playful flutes, lazy grooves and free ‘n’ easy vocals. Beginning with saucy rhetoric “Don’t you want to party with me?” by track five things have turned messy, horny and hazy – Mo ‘Horizons drops a male vocal that mumbles out (lips curled around a big blunt) “This is the place they lay with jungle fever” mashed with horns and drum fills. Music To Dance Naked To is a cleverly marketed bunch of choons, with one obvious drawback – it is not mixed together, therefore detracting from the intended flow which would compel one to start removing particles of clothing feverishly. However, this is an accomplished pick of recent classics (underground shmunderground), and each track in itself is quite strip-worthy, especially ‘Badman and Throbin’ for obvious triple-entendre reasons. Definitely a Mentos Magic Moment, with bonus g-string.
