Various Artists - Heart Murmur / All Night

  • Dubstep is a comparatively young genre but there are already a number of distinct styles developing within it. Ranking Records' output is broadly on the thoughtful, musical side. Its roster of artists is less interested in impressing dance floors with killer bass drops than they are with creating mood and atmosphere. Ranking releases tend to give a sense of moving from one place to another. The second half of the track is not the same as the first, and the music is often highly detailed and ornamented. "Heart Murmur" is a spacious track with a careful, precise rhythm that's chilled-out while still having a pleasant rolling feel. The bass is weighty, of course, but it's also unassuming, like a deep, earthly pulse that's dimly felt but never indecently exposed. The track is the work of three producers—Ruckspin, Planas and DLR—which perhaps explains the sense of inner contrast. The tune has an expansive quality, like a natural landscape containing light and shade in equal measure. If there's one thing "Heart Murmur" lacks, though, it's a compelling hook. This is not true of the flipside, "All Night," which features a looping vocal sample that's both gently hypnotic and teasingly funky. It's dubstep, but it feels more refined than what usually goes by that name. Think soft pads, understated synth sounds and, above all, groove. Ruckspin and Fez here demonstrate a deft touch and an ear for a dope rhythm. There's a real sense of movement, depth and smoothness—qualities the rest of the scene would do well to emulate.
