Loop Hotel - Room 101

  • In a world so recently flooded with techno labels with no face to the name, it was only a matter of time before the minimal community saw reason to catch up. Coming out of nowhere, save for a random shot on the chart of Steve Bug a few months ago, Loop Hotel has decided that it's not just the techno elite who can hide behind an anonymous mask. Whereas labels such as Frozen Border, Wax and Traversable Wormhole aim for the bizarre, heady and aggressive, Loop Hotel keeps its sights set on the funky. "Room 101" vaults the A-side in to a funky, abstract synth laden workout, replete with grooving bassline and a nice selection of shuffled hi-hats that will almost unequivocally have fingers pointing to the Poker Flat boss himself as the producer of this mystery EP. On the flip things get a little more interesting. And a little redundant. We're greeted by the same shuffle, but the deep padded keys of "Room 201," along with its stellar-yet-simplistic percussion, emphasize that sometimes it doesn't take a room full of equipment or complex production procedures to deliver an impressive pairing of big-room party starters. Though we're left guessing as to who produced the EP, it's as pleasant as it is frustrating to know that the minimal crowd will be joining in on the mystery producer game.
