- Whoever believes that all electronic music is disposable has obviously never heard the evergreen "Take Some Time." It's a stunningly soulful track, featuring one of the best and most recognisable house vocals—and although it's 22 years old, it still sounds as fresh and vital as the day it was conceived.
This reissue by DJ TLR's label also contains the excellent instrumental version, where languid horns try but don't quite succeed in replacing the plaintive vocals. Crisp claps and bubbly cowbells compensate, however, and make it a more DJ-friendly version than the vocal take.
And so to the contentious part of the review. I thought I was going to hate the new remix by Basic Soul Unit. Instinctively, I was telling myself that there was something deeply wrong with any attempt to mess with a classic like "Time." Thankfully, the remixer has proved these fears to be unfounded and has decided to rip up the track and start again. Indeed, Stuart Li's version is like the ghoulish opposite of Jarvis' joyous original. Ominous synths are wrapped around a surging, jacking rhythm and a brutally dark bassline provides the climax for our dystopian present.
Most reissues, if they are legit, are merely money-making ventures, so it's refreshing to hear that Crème have brought something new with this release. Take some time out and hunt this down.
