2000 And One - Heritage (Remixes) (Part 2) If I were a betting man, I'd guess that at least one of the tracks described in Villalobos' mind-bending Cocoon closing set was Onur Özer's remix of "Wan Poku Moro." It starts its path all liquid-y and fraught with uncertainty. Will we ever get to a beat? Will we ever get to a regular beat? It eventually does, but by the time that it gets there—approximately one minute—it seems like hours have passed. The idea that time can simply disappear, that you would end up losing minutes to music...well, it's the dream, isn't it? Like Bruno Pronsato's "The Make Up, The Break Up," this thing invents its own world, and drops you in—daring you to turn away from the piano that gets squeezed into a squeal or the twirling drums that skitter like mice from a light switch about to be turned on.

Tobi Neumann's "Honey Bush" remake regularizes things, reminding you just how far out Özer takes us. A mellow organ plots its way through things, giving 2000 and One's original a deeper feel. It's minimal meets deep house—hard-edged percussion saying hello to beds of synths. Neumann pushes things techier as time goes on, but its unhurried pace is a reminder of how much slower things have become in the past few years. Unfortunately, it hasn't made Neumann's mixes all that much better: Rote and relatively uninspired, there's little here to recommend other than its dance floor functionality.
