Audiojack - Kicks for Kicks

  • As Audiojack's first production effort since the release of their maiden LP Radio in April of this year, "Kicks for Kicks" signals, in part, a distinct shift in focus. Most notably, "Kicks for Kicks" makes use of an assembly line of chopped vocals that serve as a focal point throughout its duration. In a fashion unlike but a handful of the duo's prior productions, the A-side's tussle with afro soul and hip-hop excerpts is a marked divergence from the deep melodies of post-2008 Audiojack. Additionally, the inclusion of the tribal percussion adds a surprising twist to the Audiojack sphere. When these vocals and conga rhythms are coupled with a simple kick-snare combo and loopy Detroit pads, the result is a valuable tool to work into something undoubtedly special. In similar fashion to "Kicks for Kicks," the B-side's "This Is House" and "In the Hills" hold the tribal vibe. The former's jazzy drive makes it the pick of the flipside, whereas the latter sees the tandem return to the keyboard for a laid-back house cut. Both are strong tracks, however, this time around, all the focus is on the a-side.
