Sebo K in Melbourne

  • Revolver is, at first glance, completely unremarkable—a venue without pretension. You can wear (almost) anything, you can chat to anyone and the couches are oh-so-comfy. Its entrance is easily missed. If it weren't for the surly bouncers and bollards standing on the Chapel Street footpath, its façade might be passed off as any other boutique retail store that lines the strip. That easygoing calm was reflected in Revolver's guest on the night, Watergate's resident DJ and academic, Sebo K. The man's reputation had summoned an army of followers to Revolver's main room by 11:30 PM, even though he wasn't scheduled to play till 1 AM—the anticipation built in no small part by 2009's Watergate 04, a mix CD that had shown the Berliner's taste for the deeper, darker and melodic style of house. It was this charged and deeper groove that had throngs jiving between couches, pausing to cheer when one beat was replaced with another. The crowd's reactions showed that they'd come to hear a certain sound, and their rapport with Sebo K was proof that their expectations were being met. Like every other DJ who plays in the main room, it's the cage which encircles the DJ booth that adds another dimension to the spectacle, each artist appearing or reacting differently behind the wire fencing. Watching a stoic Sebo K was like awaiting a tiger's movement in an enclosure; you desperately wanted him to move or gesture, but the tension and adrenaline was half the fun. It was only when he played a remix of St. Germain's "Rose Rouge" that Sebo joined the crowd's fist pumping, albeit in a much more sedate and suave manner. Never mind his stately behavior, though: His intensity never faltered and the crowd did their part as well. Revolver often imposes its own energy, its name enough to excite any clubber in the city. It just happened to be Sebo K that enchanted this Sunday Session.
