- Sofie Loizou, Dawid Szczesny and Natalia Grosiak are among the many that have forged ties at the Red Bull Music Academy. But unlike the studiously Flying Lotus-worshipping grads of late, Millions is anything but. Loizou and Szczesny's bed for Grosiak is so gossamer, you almost want to warn her before she starts singing. The trio's first release together sounds a bit like the music box moments on Aphex Twin's Drukqs, with a soft beat pulsating in the background and a trumpet fading away into the dark. Grosiak's voice matches its delicate quality, seemingly sampled from a radio transmission from at least 50 years ago.
The whole thing seems like a delicate curio until you flip it over and encounter bvdub's remake of the tune. It's a surprisingly muscular version that sacrifices none of the beauty of the original. Grosiak sounds even further away than before, but the foreground is awash in the Shanghai-based producer's usual dub landscape. It's more propulsive than we've heard the producer in some time, though. For anyone who thought bvdub had gone totally soft, this proves his wandering eye could come back to the dance floor yet.
