Various Artists - Exchange Place: Rhythm Piranhas

  • After a quiet 2009, Strength Music returns here with its second 12-inch in a matter of weeks, and its third edition in its Exchange Place series of various artist releases. The cast of characters is the same as The Cold Case Files, with Joey Anderson once again leading things off. Anderson—a hugely underrated producer responsible for the you-know-it-when-you-hear-it deep house gem "Thee Analysis"—comes with the hypnotic and somewhat self-explanatory "Dive Deep." A wavering drone colors the minimal proceedings, which feature tiny acidic squiggles cut off before they have the chance to present themselves and a woman off in the distance repeating the words "in love." So am I. Things are distinctly less dreamy on the flip with Nicuri's "RGNA" and DJ Qu's "Tunnel Vision" offering distorted house with plenty of bite. "RGNA" has a sound in it that approximates someone repeatedly touching a downed electrical wire, delighted by the flare-ups, while Qu's spooky quavering beat adds drama to an already hauntological synth. People may complain about the level of attention being paid to house music from the States these days, but one listen to Exchange Place: Rhythm Piranhas should make you understand why. The three producers here are challenging the boundaries of the genre, presenting a lo-fi vision that is both disturbing and enthralling. Dive deep, you won't be disappointed.
