  • It’s good to see a record label taking the initiative, and Mute have done that in releasing this bargain priced collection of home made electronica. ‘Pre Set’ is in fact the first in a series to be drawn from the pick of the country’s bedroom composers. As you might expect, there’s quite a range of music. The soft but by no means comfortable tones of This Permanent Now are complemented by an inventive soundscape from displacer. Further in there is some quality deep techno from Andrew Steele and the uncoiled spring that is Jody K Jenkins’ ‘Pluck’ – by some distance the best track here. Good to see some songwriting included as well, with Bunnyhug’s vocoded ‘Napalm Girl’ hinting at a Mirwais influence. So a big thumbs up to Mute for encouraging budding talent, and who knows, I might even send a tape of my own in. You never know – it could be you…
