Adult movies and fried chicken are probably not the most convincing of bedfellows, but this—apparently—was the inspiration behind both the club night prompted by Death on the Balcony and the title track on the latest EP from Magicbag owners Mark Caramelli & Paul Hargreaves and fellow label cohort Ste Roberts. Not that you'd be able to tell from listening to it of course; it would be a stretch for any reviewer who takes themselves (semi-)seriously to compare electronic music to a deep-fried, sex-and-skin sandwich, and I'm not quite ready to take that leap.
Remixers galore step up to get their greasy hands on the unintelligible vocal samples, eerie clicks and commanding bassline of the original, with each of them doing a sterling job beefing up its fairly sparse elements. Henry Gilles goes down the dark, driving house route, working his effort around some beautifully growly bass stabs that emerge reluctantly from the gloom and smack you round the head to make sure you were paying attention. Robert Cashin turns in a similar, but slightly less memorable effort, while Moscow Records' Archie Hamilton delivers what's probably the pick of the remixes with a twisted tech house bubbler, complete with the late addition of an ear-piercingly squelchy acid line.
The real standout on the package however is unequivocally the "other" track, "Parental Guidance," which, while arguably the deepest and darkest of them all, provides the solution to a problem held by many producers who delve these kind of recesses. "How do I make my productions moody and understated, kinda like I'm not trying, and still yet get people going ballistic on a dance floor?" Anyone looking for the correct answer to this question need look no further.
