John Tejada - Unstable Condition

  • John Tejada is a like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get. But you know it's going to be chocolate. And that's almost always a good thing. The 12-inch released in front of the Lost Angeles veteran's debut album from Kompakt sounds a little bit like similar work that Gui Boratto (early days, mind) and Aril Brikha have done for the imprint. Clean melodic lines, polished beats, not a single hair out of place. "The Living Night" is slightly more melancholic in its aims, with ringing chords chiming underneath a shimmering riff. "Unstable Condition" feels like a misnomer to a certain degree: Its mid-tempo chug doesn't it allow it lose control exactly, despite Tejada's best attempts. But maybe that's why it's a condition, and nothing more. There are good days, and there are bad days. This one? Pretty solid, but exactly the type to get lost in the shuffle.
