Loops - La Familia EP

  • We Are EP—the new venture from Darko Esser with Kelly Peelen of Amsterdam bookers and managers We Are E and Frank Wiersma of Evotions—arrives not with a bang but with a glide. How appropriate. The word "warmth" does figure prominently in the press kit. And while Loops are a Dutch duo, La Familia sounds like it's beaming straight from the popular mindset known as "Ibiza." What isn't Balearic about "Padre"? There's a slow, hazy build-up, like squinting in the sun before your eyesight adjusts, and a sustained guitar drone that the beat takes quite a while to showcase in the middle. Once the beat bounces back in, the guitar starts stepping out, playing heavily treated runs that evoke both David Gilmour in space and Congolese rumba at its sweetest. "Madre" goes on fewer beatless runs than its masculine counterpart, but there's a haunted quality to its string pads, piano runs, and phased sung syllables, however insistent the beat. Rodriguez Jr.'s remix amps that pump with unrelenting kick-hat and a single, filtered, quivering note (presumably guitar) are the constant around which he delicately filters the track's melodic elements till they shiver.
