Aroy Dee - Beauty & Life

  • Delsin (and its affiliated labels) has most often been associated with Detroit-facing techno or Chicago acid. M>O>S Recordings founder Aroy Dee, however, clearly enjoys house more than anything else, judging by his infrequent output. His latest offering, Beauty & Life, has an unashamed, yet oddly workable, melancholy, something that Dee's been experimenting with since he dropped his debut 12-inch in 2003. This time, with the aid of one of the nicest synth lines put to wax under the M>O>S banner, he nicely manages the balance between a simple rhythm and his poignant melody. On the flip, Morphosis provides an edgy rework that keeps the original's winding theme intact, resulting in a brooding effort not too far from his usual palette. "Life," an altered and slightly more atmospheric version of the A-side, closes out this package on a high note. When compared to its predecessor, though, the growling low-end coupled with "Beauty"'s melody renders it slightly directionless.
