9west - Velvet EP

  • As much as the world needs music that advances with the consciousness of its developing society, it also needs music that touches base once in a while. Velvet, the sophomore Dessous release from Grecians 9west, is four tracks that do just this. They're rolling deep house that fits in well with the Dessous canon, draping dark, luxuriant folds of the eponymous cloth around the listener. The fact that there are few angles in their fabric is a double-edged sword: they neither jar nor do they overly excite. The Everything But The Girl-style journeying of "Velvet" has pattering synth stabs, yearning breaths and the alternate reality of speed-smeared midnight motorway lights. It offers more of an anthem (insofar as this kind of ambient house can be anthemic) than anything else on here. "The Big Picture" is also more panoramic than the first two tracks, with guitars whispering "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins. Yet underneath, it all quietly is what it is. To be anything more would spoil the comfort.
