Mr. Beatnick - Synthetes

  • Mr. Beatnick's Synthetes marks the first release on London-based Don't Be Afraid that isn't from boss man Semtek, but sometimes-scribe-sometimes-artist Beatnick's understated sound proves a perfect fit for the label's classy aesthetic. While Synthetes exudes the kind of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink stylistic variation that characterizes modern UK dance music, the exuberance here is kept in check by Beatnick's smooth and steady execution. The greatest embodiment of this is "Synthetes," which glides to life on a featherweight string section, its funky bassline and metallic shakers jostling the edges slightly as Beatnick litters the track with gorgeous flutters of chime and noodling funk synths, half G-funk and half post-rock. The track is given a more contemporary sounding breakbeat rework by fellow Londoner Architeq, lacking Beatnick's flawless and precise vision. Turning up the low-end heat, "Don't Walk Away from My Love" feeds vintage house through a ruthless arpeggiator, while "Casio Romance" is flabby funk to the highest degree, waddling bassline and offbeat chords providing an atmosphere so pleasantly humid it feels like every element is in some degree of melting. That's what's so fascinating about Mr. Beatnick's productions: they manage to feel familiar yet boldly experimental.
