Deepgroove & Thieve - U Got Me Thinkin

  • As Suara continue to churn out tech house at a fairly constant rate, they recently turned to similarly aligned producers Deepgroove & Thieve for their next EP. Sadly, the British collective opt for perspiration over inspiration, with even big name remixer Steve Mac failing to bring any real heat to the proceedings with his loopy, Skudge-lite remix of "Tell You Why." Opener "U Got Me Thinking" is all about the glistening and clattering percussion which slices out a rhythm as a bobbling bassline and vocal loop all jostle for attention in its wake. The whole arrangement feels rather too forced together, though, and that's something only confirmed by the EP-saving slinkiness of "Tell You Why." That track ducks and dives with crisp snares, a busier bassline and organic vocal patches adding a human touch to the sleek tech lines on show elsewhere. Immediately scraping and scratching once again is the distant sounding but sharp-edged percussion of "Get It." Once it's fleshed-out with kicks and claps, a rhythm does emerge, but it's one perpetually on edge. The final element is a short, plummeting bassline which merely draws more attention to the track's inertia.
