- The UK cellist, producer and Radiohead and Mica Levi collaborator will release his next solo LP in September.
A new Oliver Coates album is due out in September via RVNG Intl..
Shelley's On Zenn-La, Coates' third solo full-length and first for RVNG, sees the UK musician continue to refine his exploratory mix of classical cello and abstract electronics. Inspired in part by Shelley's Laserdome, a legendary nightclub in Stoke-on-Trent that closed in 1992, the album is described as coming from a "realm out of time and space" where Shelley's "can simultaneously exist on the fictional planet of Zenn-La, and can house a devotional, alien ritual of early UK rave culture, pioneering IDM, and deep minimalism." (In the Marvel comic book universe, Zenn-La is the home planet of the superhero Silver Surfer.)
We got an initial taste of the record back in April with the track "Charlev." That song, and another on the album, features vocals from Chrysanthemum Bear, while Malibu (vocals) and Kathryn Williams (flute) also make appearances.
Coates, who is touring across Europe right now in support of Thom Yorke, previously put out two solo albums on the label PRAH. He's also the principal cellist in the London Contemporary Orchestra, which featured heavily on Radiohead's 2016 album A Moon Shaped Pool and appeared with Actress in an RA Sessions last year. His other collaborative pursuits include work with Mica Levi, Laurel Halo and director Paul Thomas Anderson.
