  • YAAM has released a statement following the death of an employee outside the Berlin venue earlier this month. "We're incredibly sad and deeply shocked that Noradeen Abdallah passed away on April 12th after an incident of violence at YAAM," the Instagram post read. "Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and acquaintances." 31-year-old Abdallah had to be resuscitated by emergency services following an argument with two other YAAM employees, Berliner Morgenpost reports. He died from his injuries the following week. Both suspects were taken into police custody for identification and later released. A fundraiser has been set up to support Abdallah's family. "We want the circumstances of this tragedy to be fully clarified," the post continued. "We don't tolerate violence and are taking measures to ensure that YAAM remains a safe place that empowers people, a centre for urban lifestyle, social issues and alternative art forms." First opened in 1994, YAAM recently secured its long-term future after signing a 30-year rental agreement. Short for Young African Arts Market, the Friedrichshain space spans bars, dance floors and food stalls. Read YAAM's post in full, and donate to the fundraiser. We'll report more on this story as it unfolds.
